Role of Reinsurance

Reinsurance is essentially “insurance for insurance companies.” Insurers transfer a portion of their risk portfolio to reinsurers to limit their exposure to large losses (especially catastrophic events) and to manage their capital. This process helps stabilize the insurance market and allows primary insurers to cover larger risks than their capital would otherwise allow.
