The Investment Role

Insurance companies are among the world’s largest institutional investors. Because they collect premiums long before paying claims (sometimes decades in life insurance), they invest this pool of capital (float) to generate investment income.

This investment income is a major source of profit and helps subsidize the cost of premiums. This long-term horizon often leads to insurers holding large amounts of government bonds and corporate debt.
